Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is a central mantra and sacred phrase chanted within Nichiren Buddhism. In English, it roughly translates to "Devotion to the Mystic Dharma of the Lotus Sutra". Practitioners chant this to activate their inherent Buddha nature, overcome obstacles, and reveal their full potential in daily life.
The Meaning of the Phrase
The phrase is broken down into specific Sanskrit and Japanese components, each holding deep philosophical meaning:
  • Nam: From the Sanskrit namas, meaning to dedicate or devote oneself.
  • Myoho: Translates to "Mystic Law". It represents the fundamental, unseen truth of the universe and the reality that ordinary people inherently possess Buddha nature.
  • Renge: Means "Lotus Blossom." The lotus blooms purely amidst muddy water, symbolizing the ability to bring forth beauty and dignity amidst daily sufferings. It also represents the simultaneity of cause and effect.
  • Kyo: Means "Sutra" or "Teaching," indicating the eternal, universal truth that permeates all life.
