'De Wil tot Schijnen' - II

19 juli 2026, Hedy

Arvo Pärt - The Deer's Cry

Text: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in me, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me, Christ with me.

VOCES8 performs 'The Deer's Cry' by Arvo Pärt at St Vedast Church in London.

"Short description

The choral piece The Deer’s Cry was composed in 2007 on commission from the Louth Contemporary Music Society. Pärt built his piece on a passage from a 5th century text allegedly written by Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was the one who brought Christianity to Ireland, and is acknowledged as a saint by all Christian Churches. Historians and theologians have called him the Apostle of Ireland for his long and exceptionally intense missionary work.

There is a legend about The Deer’s Cry, the holy lorica* or the breastplate prayer, telling the story of Saint Patrick who, knowing that he and his accompanying monks were being ambushed and likely killed, led his men through the woods reciting that prayer. The enemies saw them in the woods as a mother deer with calves, and Saint Patrick and his men were thus saved.

Just as in several of his choral pieces from the first decade of the 21st century, here too Pärt has distanced himself from strict tintinnabuli technique, instead highlighting the presence of tonality as an inherent feature of Pärt’s compositional system. The harmony of The Deer’s Cry is deeply rooted in A minor, which also emphasises the steadfast nature of the prayer text.

The Deer's Cry premiered on 13 and 14 February 2008 in St. Peter’s Church in Drogheda and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dundalk, performed by the State Choir Latvija conducted by Fergus Sheil. The piece is dedicated to Eric Marinitsch from Universal Edition, with whom the composer has been in creative collaboration since the early 1990s.

Lorica – in Christian tradition, a prayer recited to summon the power of God for the protection from evil. It was recited before going into the battle, for instance. The Latin word lōrīca means armour or breastplate."

David Bowie – Word On A Wing

In this age of grand illusionYou walked into my lifeOut of my dreamsI don't need another changeStill you forced your wayInto my scheme of things
You say we're growingGrowing heart and soulIn this age of grand illusionYou walked into my lifeOut of my dreamsSweet name, you're born once again for meSweet name, you're born once again for meOh, sweet name, I call you againYou're born once again for meJust because I believe, don't mean I don't think as wellDon't have to question everythingIn heaven or hell
Lord, I kneel and offer youMy word on a wingAnd I'm trying hard to fit amongYour scheme of things
It's safer than a strange landBut I still care for myselfAnd I don't stand in my own lightLord, Lord, MY prayer fliesLike a word on a wingMy prayer fliesLike a word on a wingDoes my prayer fit inWith your scheme of things?
In this age of grand illusionYou walked into my lifeOut of my dreamsSweet name, you're born once again for meJust as long as I can see, I'll never stop this vision flowingI look twice and you're still flowingJust as long as I can walkI'll walk beside you, I'm alive in youSweet name, you're born once again for meAnd I'm ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shapeThe scheme of thingsOoh, ready to shapeThe scheme of thingsOoh, ready to shapeThe scheme of thingsOoh, ready to shapeThe scheme of things
Lord, I kneel and offer youMy word on a wingAnd I'm trying hard to fit amongYour scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land,But I still care for myselfAnd I don't stand in my own light
Oh Lord, Lord, Lord, my prayer fliesLike a word on a wingAnd I'm trying hard to fit amongYour scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land,But I still care for myselfAnd I don't stand in my own light
Lord, Lord, my prayer fliesLike a word on a wingMy prayer flies like a word on a wingDoes my prayer fit inWith your scheme of things?

VOCES8: Requiem, Op. 48 by Gabriel Fauré

VOCES8 performs Gabriel Fauré's 'Requiem, Op. 48' with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Barnaby Smith. The performance was filmed at Cadogan Hall, London in 2021 during the height of the pandemic, and this orchestration by Taylor Scott Davis was created especially for the concert. 00:00 Introitus et Kyrie 05:34 Offertorium 13:38 Sanctus 16:54 Pie Jesu 20:41 Agnus Dei 26:30 Libera me 31:35 In Paradisum TEXT and TRANSLATION Introit and Kyrie: Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them. A hymn becomes you, God, in Zion, and a vow shall be paid to you in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer: to you all flesh shall come. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, king of glory, deliver the souls of the departed from the punishments of hell and from the deep lake. O Lord Jesus Christ, king of glory, deliver the souls of the departed from the mouth of the lion, lest Tartarus swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness. We offer prayers and sacrifices of praise to you, Lord: you receive them on behalf of those souls whose memory we recall today. Cause them, Lord, to pass from death to the life which you once promised to Abraham and his seed. Amen. Sanctus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth: pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts: heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Pie Jesu: Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem. Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis sempiternam requiem. Blessed Jesus, Lord, give them rest. Blessed Jesus, Lord, give them eternal rest. Agnus Dei: Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis sempiternam requiem. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, give them rest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, give them eternal rest. May eternal light shine on them, Lord, with your saints for ever, for you are good. Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them. Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death, on that terrible day: when the heavens and earth will be shaken; when you will come to judge the age with fire. I am made to tremble, and I am afraid, since trial and anger are coming. That day, a day of anger, disaster and sorrow, That day, a mighty day, and one exceedingly bitter. Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them. May the angels lead you into paradise: may the martyrs receive you as you arrive, and bring you into the holy city of Jerusalem. May the choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a beggar, may you have eternal rest.

In paradisum deducant te angeli;
in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro, quondam paupere,
æternam habeas requiem.

Nederlandse vertaling:
Mogen de engelen u geleiden naar het paradijs;
